Grout Quantity Estimate
Choosing the Right Tile Grout
Grout fills the voids between tile edges, locks individual units into a rigid monolithic surface, and seals out moisture and debris. Selecting the wrong grout formulation or calculating an insufficient quantity can lead to project delays, color mismatch from separate batches, or scratched delicate tiles.

Grout Types Comparison
- Sanded Grout: Contains fine silica sand aggregate. Essential for joints 1/8" to 1/2" wide to provide structural body and resist shrinking cracks.
- Unsanded Grout: Very smooth texture without sand particles. Designed for narrow joints less than 1/8" and surfaces that sand could scratch (such as marble, glass, polished travertine).
- Epoxy Grout: Made from epoxy resins and filler powder. Completely waterproof, chemical-resistant, and stain-proof, ideal for commercial kitchens, steam showers, and swimming pools.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I use sanded vs unsanded grout?
Tile industry standard (TCNA) guidelines dictate: Use unsanded grout for narrow joints less than 1/8 inch (3mm) or for delicate, scratchable surfaces such as polished marble, glass, or glazed metal. Use sanded grout for joints 1/8 inch or wider because the fine sand aggregate prevents cracking, shrinking, and sagging in wider joints.
How is tile grout coverage calculated?
The industry standard formula computes the volume of grout joints across the tiled area: Weight = [((Tile Length + Tile Width) × Joint Width × Tile Thickness × Area) / (Tile Length × Tile Width)] × Grout Density Factor (~0.062 lbs/cu in) × (1 + Waste Allowance).
How much waste should I add for grout?
For standard square or rectangular floor tiles, 10% waste is recommended. For mosaic tiles (e.g. 1x1 or 2x2 hex tiles) or beveled subway tiles with frequent joints, increase your waste margin to 15% to 20% due to grout left on the tile sponge.
Why do small mosaic tiles need more grout than large format tiles?
Smaller tiles (like 1" or 2" mosaics) contain drastically more linear feet of grout joints per square foot of floor than a large 24" × 24" porcelain slab, requiring 3 to 5 times more grout weight for the same room area.
How soon can you walk on freshly grouted tile?
Standard cementitious grout requires 24 hours of curing time for light foot traffic and 48 to 72 hours before normal use or exposure to direct shower water.
