How This Is Calculated

This calculator combines two separate growth streams. Your initial deposit compounds on its own from day one, growing at your entered rate for the entire time period. Each monthly contribution then grows separately from the point it's added. A contribution made in month one has the most time to compound, while a contribution made in the final month barely grows at all before the end date. Both streams are calculated with monthly compounding based on your entered annual rate, then added together to produce your total future value.

It first calculates how much your initial deposit alone will grow to by your deadline, then figures out how large a gap remains between that projected amount and your actual goal, and finally solves for the monthly contribution needed to close that gap exactly by the deadline. A Worked Example

Using the default numbers on the "Project Growth" tab, starting with a ₹50,000 initial deposit, adding ₹5,000 every month, at a 7% annual rate, over 10 years: the projected future value comes to roughly ₹9,70,955. Of that, ₹6,50,000 is money actually contributed, the initial deposit plus 120 months of ₹5,000, and the remaining ₹3,20,955 is interest earned along the way, nearly half again as much as the total contributed.

Switching to the "Reach a Goal" tab with the same ₹50,000 initial deposit and 7% rate, but targeting ₹10,00,000 in 10 years instead: the calculator first works out that the ₹50,000 initial deposit alone grows to roughly ₹1,00,483 over 10 years at 7%, leaving a gap of roughly ₹8,99,517 to close through monthly contributions.
