How Time Card & Overtime Math Works
Calculating weekly payroll begins with tracking raw elapsed hours for each working shift, subtracting unpaid breaks, and categorizing hours into regular and overtime segments.

Regular Pay = Regular Hours × Hourly Rate
Overtime Pay = Overtime Hours × ( Hourly Rate × 1.5 )
Total Gross Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay
Federal Overtime Rules vs. California Daily Overtime
- Standard US Federal (FLSA): Overtime is calculated strictly on a 40-hour weekly basis. Working 10 hours on Monday does not trigger overtime unless your total cumulative weekly hours exceed 40.
- California & Daily Overtime States: Any hours worked beyond 8 in a single workday are paid at 1.5×, and any hours exceeding 12 in a single day are paid at double time (2.0×).
Frequently Asked Questions
How does lunch break deduction affect total hours?
Under US FLSA regulations, bona fide meal periods (typically 30 minutes or more) where an employee is completely relieved from work duties are not considered work hours and are deducted from gross elapsed time.
How is overtime pay calculated?
Under standard federal rules, non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay of at least 1.5 times their regular hourly rate for all hours worked exceeding 40 hours in a standard workweek.
Are rest breaks paid or unpaid?
Under federal labor guidelines, short rest breaks lasting 5 to 20 minutes must be counted as paid work time. Meal periods lasting 30 minutes or longer where the worker is relieved of all duties are unpaid.
Can time card hours cross midnight?
Yes. If you clock in at 10:00 PM (22:00) and clock out at 6:00 AM (06:00) the next day, the calculator automatically accounts for the overnight rollover (8.0 elapsed hours).
